The Future North Terrace Shopping Experience

Adelaide’s North Terrace is set to become the shopping boulevard for Adelaide. The tram extension currently underway opens up the North East of the CBD to commuters, shoppers and visitors and the public realm improvements scheduled for completion this year will make the iconic Adelaide terrace more accessible and beautiful than ever. Several development applications on North Terrace are in the works which will finally see some of the long unused buildings finally being redeveloped.

North Terrace Key Development Sites

The proposed $260 million development at 199-200 North Terrace “would create 26,000m2 of office and 4,000m2 of retail space across 18 storeys, with a targeted 5-star Green Star certification.” The Commercial and General, Le Cordon Bleu partnership wraps around from North Terrace to Gawler Place in the former Gallerie building, offering a range of retail tenancies including some sites ideally suited to flagship stores with North Terrace and Gawler Place frontage.

Right next door at 203 North Terrace, the proposed redevelopment offers another prime location for a flagship retail store with potential local shoppers living in the luxury accommodation directly above. The project being headed up by Catcon is a “combined total of 19 levels and basement, comprising residential, office and commercial uses, roof top garden and ancillary car parking.”

A few doors down in the Gawler Chambers building, and the Queen Adelaide Club site are also well advanced in their development plans with retail tenancies at ground floor level included in the proposals.

North Terrace Cultural Boulevard

On the north side of North Terrace, the cultural boulevard and university precinct draws an ever increasing number of visitors that will also be well serviced by the tram extension. These new developments will provide retail pathways for visitors and shoppers through to Rundle Mall and the other shopping areas of the city.

The recent announcement of H&M coming to Rundle Place, strong retail results in Adelaide and a long list of luxury retailers rumoured to be looking for Adelaide locations after setting up shop in other major capitals paints a bright future for the shopping experience on North Terrace.
